The Essential Items

  • Combination padlock: Keep your belongings safe in the hostel lockers. Padlocks are not provided free of charge by hostels. More practical than a key padlock, as keys can be lost or stolen.
  • Universal travel adaptor: This will take up little space in your backpack but you will use it daily.  Easy to use and comes with clear instructions. Compact unit with, which will fit the plug sockets in over 150 countries.
  • Large quick-drying towel: Measuring 140 X 70cm and weighing only 210g the microfibre towel is a necessity. For the beach, snorkeling trips, showering etc. Folds up compactly and fits back into the netted pouch. Most, if not all, hostels charge to rent a towel. You can have your own lightweight and hygienic towel to stay fresh whilst travelling.
  • 100ml DEET mosquito repellent: You will encounter mosquitos on your travels. This 50% DEET mosquito spray contains natural insecticidal properties to prevent insects biting you and once applied gives approximately 10 hours protection.
  • Inflatable neck pillow: To help you catch some sleep on planes, long bus journeys or when camping. If you’ve ever tried sleeping on a blown up goon bag you will appreciate this piece of kit. When deflated, this soft comfortable pillow will take up very little space.
  • Plastic clip-together cutlery set: High quality, durable and compact plastic cutlery set. You won't have to search hostel kitchens for a fork at midnight or clean somebody else's dirty spoon when you want to eat your cereal. Hygienic plastic knife, fork and spoon set, which clips together perfectly for safe keeping when travelling. Hostels sometimes charge for a cutlery set so it will pay for itself.
  • HSE compliant first aid kit: A necessity when travelling. Compact first aid kit containing the following essential first aid items: 6x washproof plasters, 6x safety pins, 1x HSE 18 x 18 dressing, 2x antiseptic wipes, 2x triangular bandages, 1x vinyl gloves, 1x first aid advice leaflet, 1x travel zip pouch.
  • Headphone splitter: Allows two people to comfortably listen to the same phone, tablet or laptop. Great for long train and bus journeys or use in your dorm room to watch a film together and not wake up your room mates. Make friends and pass the time.
  • Ear plugs: Believe me, you will need these! Re-usable soft foam plugs, which will mould to shape of ear canal. Drown out the snoring from your room mates and noise from the streets.
  • 10m duct tape: Strong, waterproof and multi-purpose. Ideal for temporary repairs of backpack, shoes, tent.
  • LED magnetic torch with hook: Compact hand held torch. Magnet on rear for use on lockers and metal bunkbeds. Hook for hanging torch from tent or branches when camping.
  • Sleeping bag liner: Lightweight and hygienic. The majority of hostels charge for borrowing sheets. An alternative to the heavier, bulkier and costlier sleeping bag, which are often not allowed to be used in hostels due to hygiene reasons.
  • Mosquito plug: When plugged into mains it releases vapour to keep mosquito's away. Highly effective and comes with 10 tablets. It is the safer, preferred alternative to mosquito coils.
  • Money belt: This slim money belt with adjustable strap can be discreetly worn under clothing and allows you to carry your passport, money, mobile phone and tickets with you. Many people aren't comfortable leaving important belongings in the hostel or in a backpack when travelling or sleeping on long bus and train journeys.
  • 100ml antibacterial hand gel: Antibacterial hand gel in plastic bottle with flip lid. This is an instant cleanser that kills 99% of bacteria. The bottle can fit into clothes pockets to be carried and used daily and can be taken as hand luggage on planes.
  • Re-usable poncho: Compact and lightweight. Preferable to a waterproof jacket. Can be folded, returned to pouch and re-used. Will keep you dry and warm when sightseeing and on trips.
  • Folding travel mirror: Compact, perfectly sized travel mirror. With a hook for hanging from your bunkbed or tent and metal covers to protect it whilst in your backpack/washbag.
  • Sewing kit: Small sewing kit with all the essentials to make minor repairs on clothes and to sew on buttons.
  • Pro Packer notebook & pen: Record flight times, booking references & Hostel address. Keep a note of tips and info from fellow travellers. Use as diary to write down the highlights, which you don't want to forget. Small and compact - The A6 size notebook fits into your shorts pocket, beach bag or backpack pocket.
